Science was my favorite subject, and I found myself keenly fascinated by chemistry, geology, and physics in general. I was an autodidact, pouring over books and manuscripts at a very young age. With many subjects I am self-taught, for when I couldn’t find adequate information, I would rely on books to teach myself how to do something (which is how I ended up teaching myself basic rocket science, for example.) I know a few things about many things. I have an insatiable curiosity for the world around me and an uncommonly restless spirit that keeps me bouncing around from hobbies and places. My biggest disappointment in life was realizing that there is not enough time to do everything or see everything. If I had the ability to live forever, I gladly would choose to. That spiritedness, or restlessness, is a blessing and a curse. Because “slow living” requires us to slow down and live in the present moment, yet I am racing toward the future and not very interested in slowing down. Knowing time is finite is a more difficult concept to wrestle with. I don’t want to seem morbid and say that I think about dying every day, but I am very conscious of what is and isn’t getting done each day, which gives me a simple awareness that a doomsday clock is ticking somewhere. I am adventurous and come from a very long line of explorers and trailblazers. It is partly why I think I have lived so many “lives” in my life so far. It is difficult to settle down, to limit movement, to be bound by the confines of what often feels like a cage. Many times I have made decisions that caused me to encounter that. We would drive, in near-darkness, with only the headlights on the road as we left the ridgetop. It was usually just her and I, the low hum of the car, and the smell of warm coffee or hot chocolate. We drove a few minutes to the Ponderosa truck stop, which usually was closed this time of night. It was one of the highest points around us with a dark sky and no tree cover. It was there that she showed me the Universe. I would watch the “stars” shooting across the sky. The Perseids, especially, was a favorite shower. It was magical, and also magical to share that time with my mother— knowing her time was often limited with work and other obligations. I knew she sacrificed sleep and other things just to bring me this small joy. A unconscious ritual I had for a while was that every season, I would go hike up to Black Balsam Knob alone. I would run my fingers along chartreuse mossy rocks, feel the dry grasses as the wind blew them against my bare skin, and lay down in the endless fabric of tall balsam firs that seemed to stretch into a semi-dark oblivion. I have always felt this strange sense of peace around things that feel ancient— as if they, like me, are something otherworldly out of time. Although I love exploring the world with others, some of the most significant moments in my life have been experienced fundamentally alone, and I feel I am able to live more presently in the absence of distraction. For whatever reason I feel less fear around nature than I do around people. I would wake up early driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway, climb the rugged paths and scale the slick rocks of Black Balsam, until I would reach the top of the mountaintop where you could look around in all directions. Some seasons, of course, were foggy and rainy. I spent part of my birthday in 2019 up on that mountain with cold October rain and mist blanketing me. I likened it to the many seasons of my life—some sunlit and some stormy— but it would force me to take pause in the chaotic bustle of my existence. I wept that time, my tears mingling with the cool mist, unsure of why, although now I know it was simply in response of change that was inevitably to come. I always came across more aloof and disconnected than anything else, but inside of me there was a tumultuous ocean of emotions and an everlasting forest fire heart that burned. I wear emotional masks for many occasions, but there is an inexhaustible complexity within me that being in nature tends to activate. It was only a few years back that I expanded that practice to allow someone to engage in that ritual with me. I have since moved away, but the place will always hold a special place in my heart. As long as we have faith in our cause and an unconquerable will-power, salvation will not be denied us.” It is a loose but powerful reference to Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar, in which Cassius says, “Men at some time are masters of their fates; The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, But in ourselves, that we are underlings.” High tide “seasons” cause us to ultimately decide what is biologically and physiologically programmed within us and what our role is in directing our lives. It is an age-old question—do we steer the ship or does the ship steer us? They cause us to examine our inclinations and drives and take accountability for what is within the scope of our control. When we can look at our lives as a sequence of events in which we gain increasing mastery over ourselves, we start to gain clarity on how our failing impact others and how to remedy that in the future. In the grand scheme of things, we are small and insignificant. The world will continue to turn, time will not stop, and we will eventually be forgotten by time and distance no matter what we accomplished while we are here. It is a very select few who are remembered for their accomplishments, and even then such longevity is not guaranteed. It is a sobering realization that our existence is so transient, but real freedom begins when you embrace the impermanence of living and operate with a sense of urgency to live a life well-lived. I always joke that we likely live in a simulation, but I think a more rational ideology is that our true control over our lives is substantially limited. We can choose to fight against the currents— or we can choose to let the water wash over us and let our path unfold naturally. There is nothing wrong with either method— each carries merit. Each of us has the ability to evolve. But some days we aren’t going to get it right, and that is okay. Throughout history there have been many examples of mutations gone significantly wrong or creatures not evolving in ways that fundamentally served them. It’s okay to fail. It is perfectly okay to make mistakes in the majority of cases. Platypi exist, after all. The key is that we learn from them and grow from them. When we stop growing— when we stop evolving—we become obsolete. I think most of us, at some point or another, have shifted into higher versions of ourselves. Not in all cases, of course, but we all have the ability to evolve through many versions of ourselves during our lives. We can look back later and see how significant growth is, but it doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It is stepping outside of our comfort zones and confronting those less tangible parts of who we are that cause significant evolution. A meteor can travel for billions of years, hurtling through space and time, before impacting our planet in a small flash of light streaking across the sky. Much like the meteorite, out time here is short in the physical sense. The landscape changes very slowly, continental plates shifting roughly 0.6 inches a year, yet we humans are a blip on the map in terms of the Earth’s history. The lesson is that the world will continue to turn on its axis whether we are here or not. The important part is believing there is a reason why and that there is something better coming on the other side of a situation. And that is why, when faced with an uncertain or precarious fate, it is important to be calm. I believe we on some levels can manifest our own destinies with intention and dedicated work toward those goals, but ultimately we don’t maintain the control over our lives or our environments. There is great power in life’s storms. When I am seeking answers for when the bad things happen— the tough things especially— I always return to nature and the universe. The answers are never verbal, but they are apparent and timeless. As much as community is a gift, so, too, is solitude. Perhaps this was a lesson I always knew on some level, as one would often find me buried in the pages of a book were one to look. I learned time and time again that the world can be harsh and unyielding, that curve balls are a basic element of our existence here, and that in the end I walk a path that on many levels I must walk alone. When I was younger, these stark facts would be debilitating and upsetting. Decades into this life, however, I am finding that these are fundamentally gifts because they have over time made me very strong and more assertive. They kick my butt out of the complacent comfort zone and into a refined form of who I am meant to be. There is a transitional state in our existence here in this world. I believe now that it is vital to accept this deep truth in order to live a happier— more fulfilling— life. My mother has a phrase she uses quite a bit—“There is no crying in baseball.” It often made us giggle growing up hearing these words, but my mother is one of the strongest people I have ever known and it is not something to take lightly. She taught me firsthand to be resilient, to learn to exhibit significant grit in the face of adversity, and how to intellectually respond to a world that is often confusing or unfair. She is a realist in every sense of the word. The desert after the rain comes almost explodes in a sea of color and activity seemingly overnight. This is a lesson in adaptability. We should all try to adapt a little more to where life plants us and be resilient enough to weather the dry periods. Life is transactional and seasonal. Every season is an opportunity to transform into something new. A big part of evolution is performance-related. The sea is constantly in flux even on the stillest of mornings.
